Although acute pancreatitis is a common reason for emergency hospital admissions, (1) there is a paucity of information about the disease in a South African context (2,3) and to what extent disease severity and outcomes compare with published literature on the subject. We prospectively investigated the hospital prevalence, aetiology, disease severity and outcomes of pancreatitis in a regional hospital setting in Durban, South Africa.
